Teacher Education and Leadership Program Authorizations

Columbus State University offers several online degree, certificate, and endorsement programs. These programs are designed to meet the criteria for certification, endorsement, and advancement in the subject matter and grade level classifications established by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Each state board establishes their own criteria for teacher/leader certification, which, in addition to educational requirements, may include (but are not limited to) testing requirements, mandatory certifications, minimum years in service, background checks, applications and fees. These programs, unless otherwise noted, are currently approved or exempt from approval, and meet the regulatory requirements to be offered to students who are physically present in the following states:

Alabama: The AL-DOE does not recognize online degrees for certification. An educator would need to become certified in GA and use the process of reciprocity to seek certification in AL. The GA certificate must be in an equivalent certification area/level as offered in AL. Contact the AL-DOE for additional information about teacher certification.


Contact the AL-DOE regarding their ability to honor online degrees, with regional accreditation, for pay increases.

Delaware: The DE-DOE will not verify to an institution in advance that an out of state teacher education/leadership program will or will not lead to certification in DE. They require an individual review of a candidate's qualifications to determine eligibility for certification. The program must be in an equivalent certification area/level as offered in DE. Contact the DE-DOE for additional information about teacher certification.

Florida: The FL-DOE will not verify to an institution in advance that an out of state teacher education/leadership program will or will not lead to certification in FL. They require an individual review of a candidate's qualifications to determine eligibility for certification. The program must be in an equivalent certification area/level as offered in FL. Contact the FL-DOE for additional information about teacher certification.

Illinois: The IL-DOE will not verify to an institution in advance that an out of state teacher education/leadership program will or will not lead to certification in IL. They require an individual review of a candidate's qualifications to determine eligibility for certification. The program must be in an equivalent certification area/level as offered in IL. Contact the IL-DOE for additional information about teacher certification.

New Jersey: The NJ-DOE will not verify to an institution in advance that an out of state teacher education/leadership program will or will not lead to certification in NJ. They require an individual review of a candidate's qualifications to determine eligibility for certification. The program must be in an equivalent certification area/level as offered in NJ. Contact the NJ-DOE for additional information about teacher certification.

Ohio: The OH-DOE will not verify to an institution in advance that an out of state teacher education/leadership program will or will not lead to certification in OH. They require an individual review of a candidate's qualifications to determine eligibility for certification. The program must be in an equivalent certification area/level as offered in OH. Contact the OH-DOE for additional information about teacher certification.

The Intervention Specialist license requires 12 semester hours of course work in the teaching of reading that is not provided by the CSU M.Ed. Special Education program. Students pursuing this path would need to complete this additional coursework. Contact the OH-DOE for additional information.

Rhode Island: The RI-DOE will not verify to an institution in advance that an out of state teacher education/leadership program will or will not lead to certification in RI. They require an individual review of a candidate's qualifications to determine eligibility for certification. The program must be in an equivalent certification area/level as offered in RI. Contact the RI-DOE for additional information about teacher certification.

South Carolina: To determine if an online program is accepted for licensure purposes in SC, the SC-OES requires that the student submit a written request for program review and approval for all online programs prior to enrolling.

Tennessee: The TN-DOE will not verify to an institution in advance that an out of state teacher education/leadership program will or will not lead to certification in TN. They require an individual review of a candidate's qualifications to determine eligibility for certification. The program must be in an equivalent certification area/level as offered in TN. Contact the TN-DOE for additional information about teacher certification.

Texas: CSU does not offer any programs approved as a Texas Educator Preparation Program.

To be certified in TX, a student would need to first become licensed in GA, then undergo a Review of Credentials and apply for a 1 year permit, and pass the Texas certification exam. The TEA recommends that educators contact them prior to enrolling to discuss the requirements for out-of-state certified educators.

Virginia: The VA-DOE will not verify to an institution in advance that an out of state teacher education/leadership program will or will not lead to certification in VA. They require an individual review of a candidate's qualifications to determine eligibility for certification. The program must be in an equivalent certification area/level as offered in VA. Contact the VA-DOE for additional information about teacher certification.

The program must be approved by the home state for the purpose of licensure or certification to be used for licensure or certification in VA.

Wisconsin: According to the WI-DPI, applicants for a Wisconsin educator license who completed their program outside of Wisconsin will not usually have fulfilled all the statutory requirements for a Wisconsin educator license. Applicants who are otherwise eligible for a Wisconsin license based on their credentials may be issued a license with stipulations.

These programs cannot currently enroll students who are physically present in: Colorado or New York.

Our Education and Educational Leadership programs are approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, and accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (now Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation). Columbus State University is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC).
